Mini-Teach Reflection
10/25/2006
I was surprised how unprepared I was for the mini-teach assignment. I had the lesson plan figured out, aside from the reasoning and such within the lesson. The lesson plan was laid out as to what I would cover, and how it would tie in with the previous and following days’ lessons. However, when it actually came down to it, I feel like I floundered.
Part of my distress may have come from the fact that my lesson plan was based around follow-up from the previous day, and then setting the students up for the quiz on the following day. I felt like I had to constantly reaffirm my plan to the peer group so they wouldn’t think I was an absolute imbecile. As a whole, the peer group was very receptive and supportive of my mini-teach assignment, however.
Once I got my overly-long explanations out of the way, I felt more comfortable covering the core of my assignment. Probably not as comfortable as I should be in front of only 3 classmates, but nonetheless comfortable enough in covering the information for the rest of the lesson.
This was a good learning experience as, again, it made me realize exactly how thought-out and planned a lesson plan needs to be (hence the ‘plan’ part of ‘lesson plan’, I suppose). It was also enjoyable watching the other group members do their assignment, as it is a lot easier to critique another student rather than an established teacher you may be observing.
